Understanding the significance of Genesis is so vital
because it puts the closest thing to the heart of God into perspective –
Himself. He shows us throughout the creation story that He is the first,
middle, and the end. It all came from Him, revolves around Him, and will return
to Him. Upon reading Genesis we have an
understanding of where we come from, and as we know, recognizing your past is
the first step to your future.
So, through the stories of Adam and Eve, Cain
and Abel, Noah, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Rachel, and
Joseph and his brothers, we learn not only about our ancestors or see ourselves
in many of their faces; but we also learn how God loves Himself through us… I
used to say, I rock out to the cling, clang of mercy & grace as if it were
a soundtrack to my life. But as I read and reflect, the lyrics “you’re so vain,
you probably think this song is about you” begin to play in my head, because
the whole time I thought God showed me mercy & grace because He loved me
that much, as if I were the center of His universe. When in reality He is at
the center of His universe. I’m just a bystander, helplessly absorbing the
remnants of His love for Himself. We are, after all, just a piece of Him.
